Padulator is designed with the idea of making rich interesting pad-type sounds, although it’s capable of much more.

Due to the novel algorithm employed (details in the download) it uses a lot of CPU, so it may be best to render the tracks and freeze the plugin. Alternatively you could use the Recorder to make clips and samples, and just use those.

Zip incldes a user guide and presets, many of which were created by Manfred Plümer.

SIM-PF is a synthesiser dedicated to simulating a pianoforte.

As such, it doesn’t need a huge amount of disk space or RAM and it loads quickly.

Being a synthesiser rather than a sampler, you don’t hear loop points and the parameter control allows you to tailor the sound or create more extreme variations.

Rank Two is a synthesiser designed specifically to simulate the sound of a rank of pipe organs.

A rank is a single set of pipes tuned with a similar sound and assigned to a chromatic scale covering typically 5 octaves. Usually more than 1 rank makes up a “Division” and a Division will be assigned to one keyboard manual, with the possibility on a real organ of coupling Manuals/Divisions together so the performer can play several ranks and divisions simultaneously.

Rank Two plugin is intended to have several instances in the DAW to give a “mixture” to create a fuller sound. However, a single plugin instance is capable of a wide range of full sounds as demonstrated by some of the presets provided. Use of the extensions is an easy way to build a big sound with fewer instances running in the DAW.

Physical Modelling is used for the wind/pipe interactions and sinewave-based additive synthesis for the tone itself. These two sound generators interact in terms of amplitude, and the sound thus created was tuned at the design stage to give results close to real pipe sample sets I have auditioned. The Reed section uses one of 15 reed waveforms, created in my Quilcom Wavemaker 4, to excite a bank of harmonically tuned resonant filters with very high Q, to give a more defined and controllable spectrum.

Caster is a granular synthesisersynthesiser.

Caster allows an adjustable grain cloud of up to 24 grains per note playing at once. The grain lengths can be adjusted, their start positions set and modulated by a scanner and their pitch offset can be modulated by a dedicated LFO.

The base pitch of the grains can be controlled by a MIDI keyboard so the cloud can be pitched and generated polyphonically. In this way, a four note chord could have up to 96 grains playing at once, for example.

The wav sound files (clips) the synth operates on can be recorded in the synth, loaded into the synth or you can choose from several inbuilt clips. I’ve provided a range of short wav files in the download and these can be used to get started directly.

In addition there is a simple SUB oscillator to pad out the resulting sound, an ADSR envelope generator with adjustable curves and velocity response, and a filter with several response types, key tracking and ADSR modulation.

Since granular synthesis is often used to create soundscapes, washes and ambient effects, a reverb (by Martin Vicanek) is provided to help with sound design and auditioning some of the presets.

A range of presets are provided to demo some typical applications and to act as starting points for experimentation.

BFP is a Barber pole Flanger Plugin to give the illusion of a continuously rising or falling flanging effect.

This illusion is more apparent at low LFO rates, but at higher rates the effect can still sound interesting.

Zip includes a paper detailing 3 proposed methods. The BFP uses 4 delay-based flangers and a 4-phase LFO. Click on the BFP label for more info about the controls.

SECTION explores instrument ensemble simulation without using a conventional delay-based chorus system.

The main technique is to take any waveform and create unique waveform tables using a technique called Phase Scrambling. This retains the partials’ magnitudes but randomises their phases to give 9 different waveforms with broadly the same timbre. These can then be detuned and panned without the pronounced “flanginess” of more common methods.

You could think of it as a glorified brass and string synth that can do other stuff too.
