freeTILT! is a tube EQ / saturation plugin.

One knob. One fader. Delicious tube EQ & saturation. This a stripped down version of the TILT! plugin, another dreamteam collab between Mixland’s Jesse Ray Ernster and Kiive Audio’s Eddie Lucciola! FreeTILT! is a powerful passive tilt equalizer with an adjustable vacuum tube output stage. The EQ curves and tube circuitry were inspired by classic and modern pieces of tube gear, and various aspects of those boxes were modeled and mangled at an exceptionally bizarre level of precision to provide a delicious and undeniably-pleasing sound. The tilt knob boasts (you guessed it) tilt functionality with fixed high and low frequency points at 100hz and 12khz, and the user’s EQ moves feed directly into the tube circuit and will influence the amount of drive and harmonic saturation that will be heard. Texture for days, baby! Additionally, the user can control the amount of tube saturation using the grit parameter, and the effect ranges from subtle warmth to a sizzling clipping extravaganza depending on the amount chosen. The GUI is inspired by Jesse Ray’s Los Angeles mixing room, MIXLAND, featuring the Strauss Elektroakustik MF-4 monitors.

Tilde-Q is a highly accurate Tilt EQ, meant for tone shaping with very broad strokes, rather than surgical corrections.

For sources that are “too thin”, or “muffled”, or “lack clarity”, etc, this is the perfect EQ to use.

However, if you have a very specific frequency that needs taming, such as a ringy snare, or feedback at a specific frequency, then this is obviously not the tool.

Tilde-Q is much, much more accurate than comparable EQs offered by other plugin manufacturers that typically employ one simple shelving filter around a specific “centre” frequency. Tilde-Q offers an EQ curve that is virtually perfectly linear over the complete audio spectrum.

• The main Tilt control, allowing for a slope from -6.0dB/octave to +6.0dB/octave, highly accurate over the entire control range as well as over the entire audible frequency spectrum.
• 24dB/octave low and high cut filters, meant to keep the low and high frequencies in check.

Because the curve is virtually linear over the entire audio spectrum (if we ignore the low and high cut filters for a moment), there is no “centre” frequency, and Tilde~Q therefore offers no control for this.

Tilt EQ is a linear tilt EQ with a single knob. This way the spectral balance of audio material can be changed very easily without introducing colouration.
Tilt EQ is based on FIR filters that can be either linear or minimum phase. Baxandall minimum phase IIR filters also have been implemented in order to allow further adjustments. The following graphs show second order Baxandall shelving filters in comparison to the FIR approach with linear slope. The tilt of the slope can be set by the linear tilt knob. The steepness of the slope is given in dB/oct.
